Ceremonial Plants

The Robinson Pomo's used elderberry stick to make a flute. One whistle was about 10 inches long with mouth holes at each end and four noteholes in four segments in the middle. Other kinds of whistles included the one-bone whistle, the two-bone whistle and the large Kuksu whistle.

Eastern Pomo's used rattles made of split elder wood, bound and painted and used as a clapper in dancing. Another kind of rattle was made out of six cocoons, filled with little pebbles, bound with skin, and hung from a long stick with strings. This rattle was used in dancing and in ceremonies used by medicine men.

Another instrument was the hollow log drum. This was made supported on posts with ropes and thumped with a thick stick to make hollow sound at dances.
